The work will bring the two companies together to publish local air quality data for San Francisco Bay Area, Los Angeles and the Central Valley on Google Earth APP. To put this information together, the two companies used Google Street View cars for 4,000 hours, covering more than 100,000 miles.

Google said scientists and air quality experts can use this information to help local organizations, governments and regulators improve air quality and provide solutions to improve air quality. These measurements show that air pollution is affected by congestion in highways, traffic in local streets, and weather patterns that trigger inland pollution.

Google said it has so far registered more than a dozen air quality data points and promised it was just the "beginning." Earlier this year, Google conducted a similar experiment in Oakland, where the company worked with the Environmental Protection Fund and the University of Texas at Austin to identify areas of high pollution. This cooperation eventually led to this interactive map, reflecting the most polluted areas.
