Sharp and Japan monitors, both Apple suppliers, plan to start producing OLED displays next year or later. South Korea's Samsung Electronics has started to supply OLED displays to smartphone manufacturers worldwide, and LG displays also supply television monitors with such displays.
"Do we want to keep (OLED) technology in Japan? I'm going to discuss this issue with the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry and the Japanese Industrial Innovation Organization (INCJ)," Dai said.
Dai Zhengwu said he will contact the government to negotiate investment in JOLED, a Japanese affiliate company that sold the first OLED displays to Sony on Tuesday.
JOLED, which owns the technology for low-cost OLED displays, plans to raise 100 billion yen ($ 888 million) in materials, equipment and electronics to expand capacity.
Japanese monitors and INCJ declined to comment. JOLED no comment yet.
