Amon's statement also responded to previous media reports that Qualcomm will withdrawserverChip business rumors. When Amon was interviewed by the First Financial Journalist before the Guiyang Expo, he said: "We did not withdraw from the server chip business. As a shareholder of Huaxin, Qualcomm will continue to be Huaxin Tong in technical expertise, design capabilities and management. Provide important support and assistance to ensure that Huaxintong has sufficient resources and the overall strength of China's integrated circuit industry."
Amon said that the cooperation projects between Qualcomm and the Guizhou provincial government have an important position in Qualcomm's business strategy. He told the First Financial reporter: “The rapid growth of smart connected devices and the development of artificial intelligence have accelerated the expansion of data centers to include edge computing, and the server technology market has bright prospects. China is the fastest growing sector in this area. One of the markets with the greatest potential."
Amon explained to the First Financial Reporter: “In smart connected devices, how to combine 5G with artificial intelligence will become a key development area for Qualcomm’s future. We are very focused on edge computing and the data center is also an interesting topic. We look To the point of integration of edge computing and data centers."
He believes that Qualcomm's opportunities are based on the combination of the Arm architecture server chip and data center. "The data center is very new to Qualcomm. To succeed in this field, we must cooperate with the cloud service providers in order to break the barriers to entry into this field." Amon told CCP reporters, "Because Most of the server chip areas are monopolized by X86."
He also stressed the need to recognize the maturity of China's mobile Internet development, Internet giants such as BAT need a large number of ARM-based server chips in their data center, which is also a new trend. Amon told the First Financial reporter: “The first thing we did was to develop the data center business through a joint venture with the Guizhou government, Huaxin Tong. The second step was to continue to develop technology and support for Huaxintong. To meet the needs of deep learning and artificial intelligence, and expand the data center business to the edge computing of mobile networks."
Huaxin Tong told the First Financial Reporter: “Huaxin Communications has established a fully-structured technical team since its establishment two years ago. Through the cooperation with Qualcomm, the R&D team’s capabilities have been tempered and a competitive one has been developed. Next, in the strategic direction of firm development of ARM server chip products, Huaxintong will work with industry partners to jointly develop the server chip ecosystem and become a world-class semiconductor design company."
According to reports, Huaxintong's first-generation server chips have already completed R&D and tapeout work, and will be unveiled at the China Big Data Industry Fair, and will be available at the end of this year. At the same time, the research and development of its second-generation server chip has been carried out in an orderly manner.
Both parties also stated that the future of ARM server chips is bright, and all parties will work closely together to promote the establishment and improvement of the ARM server industry ecosystem through the joint venture Huaxintong. With the support of all parties, Huaxintong will accelerate the establishment of its core technical strength and gradually shift its focus from the Chinese market to the global market.
