With the acquisition of Sharp, Foxconn has become the world's top display panel maker. It also invests in self-driving car startups and cancer research.
However, due to the fact that the stock price has fallen by about 20% since the end of last year, Foxconn is under pressure to show that it can turn new business into a growth engine. Foxconn currently has a market capitalization of US$51 billion and is the second-highest market value company in Taiwan.
The acquisition of Sharp and some of its most recent investment deals, including Sharp's $36 million acquisition of the Toshiba PC business agreement announced this week, all indicate that the production of proprietary branded products is part of Foxconn's diversified strategy.
