As retailers compete to launch digital products, competition in the French supermarket business has intensified. Casino Guichard Perrachon SA announced a deal in March this year through itsAmazonThe platform's Monoprix store sells goods to the Parisian public. In the same month, Leclerc, another French food retailer, announced that it would withdraw its home delivery service in France. As early as last year, Casino announced the cooperation with the retail e-commerce technology provider Ocado Group.

Since taking over the CEO of Carrefour last summer, Alexandre Bompard has promised to build Carrefour as a leader in grocery grocery e-commerce and reduce the company’s reliance on large stores in the suburbs of France.

“This transaction is a transformative move by Carrefour to become a leader in grocery e-commerce and the first step in a turnaround plan announced in January,” said Marie Cheval, head of digital transformation at the company, in a telephone interview. "This is the first time that a French user can purchase groceries through Google's user interface. It is also the first time in the world that fresh food is sold through the Google platform."

The retailer said that Carrefour will also allow more than 160,000 employees to use Google tools such as Gmail. Google will provide digital training for more than 1,000 Carrefour employees in the next six months to prepare for business transformation. (晗冰)
