With the acquisition of MIPS, Wave has the opportunity to expand its technology into a wider range of devices.
It is reported that the Wave chip is mainly used in the AI training and reasoning stage. Although considering Nvidia as the biggest challenger,Word2vecIn dataset testing, Wave declared himself faster.
Chris Nicol, chief technology officer of the company, stated at a conference in April that a set of training time of 4 minutes and 20 seconds for dual-Intel processors + 4 Nvidia V100 systems was used, while the Wave side took only 1 minute and 41 seconds.
Wave Computing's AI chip technology is ahead of competitors such as Nvidia.
As for MIPS, this long-established company was founded in 1984. One of the founders, John Hennessy, has just won the prestigious Turing Award for his invention of "Reduced Instruction Set Computer" (RISC) chip technology.
MIPS was later acquired by Silicon Graphics and was subsequently included in the second half of 2017 by Imagination Technologies. However, Hennessy also became the principal of Stanford University and now Chairman of Google.
