Sina Technology News, Beijing time on July 10th news, Tencent will launch an international version of the WeGame store and social platform in Hong Kong, and plans to build overseas markets for PC games developed in China.
“ The Hong Kong version of WeGame is under development. “A Tencent spokesperson said on Friday that this version will be available to overseas users and we will use this platform to bring more Chinese games to the international market. ”
As the largest PC game distribution platform in China, WeGame currently offers about 220 games to download, including games developed overseas. According to data disclosed by Tencent, by April of this year, Don't Starve Together, a Canadian independent game production company Klei Entertianment, had sold more than 2 million copies.
Before Tencent revealed the plan, US game developer Valve announced last month that it had an exclusive agreement with Perfect World to introduce the Steam distribution platform to China.
Although the launch date of the new Steam China website has not yet been finalized, this US PC gaming platform has accumulated a large number of users in China. According to Valve's May survey, more than half of Steam users set the game language to Simplified Chinese.
“While WeGame still faces the competition from Steam, it has several advantages, including localized content, support for Chinese indie game developers, and Tencent’s massive social media network —— at least in the home market. ” IDC game analyst Turian Tan & middot; Tan (Turian Tan) said, "With the huge number of users accumulated by WeChat, QQ and video blog distribution channels, Tencent can provide a very high exposure for the games released on WeGame. ”
According to market research firm Newzoo, the market for boxed and downloaded PC games will reach $28.6 billion this year. This is also the market that WeGame hopes to compete for. As the world's largest PC gaming platform, Steam has more than 20,000 games and 43 million daily active users.
However, Tencent is stepping up to build a more powerful game library. The company has a large stake in US game developers such as Riot Games, Epic Games, Glue Mobile and Activision Blizzard, as well as companies such as South Korea's CJ Games and Japan's Aiming.
WeGame also announced on July 7 that the platform will introduce dozens of new games for Chinese PC gamers in the coming months, including Monster Hunter: World and Fortress Night ( Famous games such as Fortnite).
With the rapid growth of the global smartphone game industry, Tencent also acquired Finnish mobile game developer Supercell in 2016 for US$8.6 billion.
Newzoo estimates that the global video game market is expected to reach $137.9 billion this year, including consoles and smartphones.
The international expansion of Tencent WeGame will also help the company accelerate the launch of new games that bypass the limits of China's regulatory system.
