According to Taiwan's Economic Daily, Apple's second-generation iPhone X and the widely anticipated 6.5-inch iPhone X Plus will join Apple Pencil support. TrendForce, a Taiwan research firm, made the same forecast earlier this week.

Apple Pencil support will be limited to OLED models, which means Apple's upcoming 6.1-inch iPhone with a LCD screen will not be able to use Apple Pencil, the report quoted industry insiders as saying. Apple Pencil was released in November 2015 with the 12.9-inch iPad Pro and is available on all iPad Pro models released since then. At present, the compatibility of Apple Pencil has expanded to the sixth generation of iPad.

If the rumors are true, it will be Apple's first iPhone model to support the stylus in 11 years. 2007, Apple's late co-founder Steve Jobs said when he introduced the original iPhone. "No one wants a stylus on a smartphone," but Apple insists that the Apple Pencil is a drawing tool.

It's not clear whether Apple will introduce a smaller pencil for the iPhone, because the current version may be too cumbersome for the iPhone. Apple Corp has not updated its design since it was first introduced three years ago.

Elan, Taiwan's handwriting pen chip supplier, is likely to win, the Economic Daily reported, but it is not clear whether the company is supplying Apple or whether it is benefiting only from the newspaper's belief that more and more modern smartphones may use handwriting pens. Elan is currently supplying touch pad chips for Wacom.

There have been rumors for some time about the future of the iPhone supporting Apple Pencil, and Apple CEO Steve Cook has previously inadvertently revealed that he used the device on the iPhone. In addition to Apple Pencil, previous reports have indicated that Apple will provide 512GB storage options for OLED models.
