Tencent Technology News, August 28 news, according to foreign media reports, e-commerce giant Amazon just announced that its second convenience store Amazon Go has opened, the store is also located in Amazon's hometown of Seattle.

The new store is 1,450 square feet (135 square feet), slightly smaller than the first flagship store, Amazon Go (1800 square feet). The second store will offer a variety of ready-to-eat breakfast, lunch, dinner and snack options, as well as Amazon's Meal Kits.

Amazon pointed out that these foods will be provided by Amazon chefs, local kitchens and bakeries. For example, it offers fast food such as potato chips, chocolate bars, sweets and locally made chocolates, as well as lunch options such as salads, sandwiches and burritos. For dinner, the Amazon package offers all the ingredients for a family dinner for two people, which takes about 30 minutes to prepare.

Compared to the Amazon Go flagship store, the new store has fewer options to choose from. The flagship store has beer and wine, as well as a wide variety of grocery items, including Whole Foods' 365 Everyday Value brand. In addition, due to the small size of the store, there is no kitchen in the store, and fresh food will come from the Amazon kitchen in other parts of Seattle.

Amazon said that the second convenience store will only be open on weekdays, from 7 am to 7 pm, as this is to cater to the needs of office workers.

Earlier reports said that Amazon plans to open up to six Amazon Gos in 2018. But the company has not publicly discussed its roadmap. However, in May of this year, Amazon mentioned plans to open stores in Chicago and San Francisco in the recruitment news. Amazon only confirms that the plan is under development and will not confirm when it will be launched in these markets.

The first Amazon Go is expected to be available in Seattle and Los Angeles. From a technical point of view, the second convenience store is no different from the flagship store.

Amazon Go's system includes a large number of overhead-mounted cameras that track shopper behavior from all angles, weight sensors on the shelves, and Amazon Mobile's mobile app. This app automatically charges customers regardless of what the passenger buys.

From a computer vision and machine learning perspective, these convenience stores are a feat and spur a lot of competitors to follow suit, and they want to bring similar technology to Amazon's competitors and other retailers. But some people question whether it is necessary to replace the store staff with camera arrays and other technologies to save shoppers about 1 minute of checkout time.

Ultimately, Amazon Go's larger vision is to reduce the number of employees, even though Amazon claims to move more employees to the “Customer Service” and “Inventory” positions. In the long run, workers may get better, higher-paying jobs, but the immediate result is short-term layoffs.

Amazon has not yet discussed the opening dates of other Amazon Go convenience stores in the future.
