Apple's latest iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max are already on the market, and repair experts from iFixit have unraveled it for the first time to get a better understanding of Apple's iPhone series this year.
Although Apple says the iPhone XS and the iPhone XS Max have IP68 dust-proof and waterproof grades, iFixit says they can't find any obvious evidence that the SIM card tray and other seals look basically the same as the iPhone X. Holland repair website FixjeiPhone found that iPhone XS is a little hard to open.
After removing the screen, iFixit found some internal differences in the iPhone XS Max compared to the iPhone XS, including a resized Tacti Engine and an extended logic board with one screen interface moved to the bottom and a larger headphone volume.
The dismantlement confirmed that the iPhone XS Max, like last year's iPhone X, used a dual L-cell battery, while the iPhone XS used a single L-cell for the first time, instead of two separate cells. Previous documents from the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology showed that the battery capacity of the iPhone XS and the iPhone XS Max were 2658 mA-h and 3174 mA-h, respectively.
Because of the L-shaped battery, iFixit says Apple uses a groove design in the inner corner of the iPhone XS battery (not in the Max version) to avoid excessive pressure from thermal expansion. IFixit said in the dismantling report that only time will tell us how the new battery cell behaves.
In terms of logic boards, apple used a new custom power management chip on iPhone XS Max. Previous reports have suggested that Apple will use its own power management chip in at least some of its 2018 iPhones to reduce its dependence on supplier Dialog Semiconductor.
However, the demolition does not confirm whether the Gigabit LTE modems for the iPhone XS and the iPhone XS Max are from Intel or Qualcomm. IFixit found a 32% increase in the size of the wide-angle sensor, and changes in the camera module not only affect the interior space, but also slightly alter the size of the main camera, proving that the iPhone XS camera is about a millimeter longer and wider than the iPhone X.
IFixit's iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max can be repairable with a score of 6 points (10 points). Repair experts say screen and battery repairs are still a priority in Apple's design, but all-glass design means that once the glass breaks, the entire chassis needs to be replaced.
