Microsoft, a former software giant, is showing more market influence in the hardware industry. Microsoft now holds 4.1% of the U.S. PC market, ranking the fifth largest PC manufacturer in the United States, thanks to the performance of its Surface product line, according to Gartner, a market research firm.
Ranked PC before Microsoft's US manufacturers are HP, DELL, Lenovo and apple. But globally, the top five are Lenovo, HP, DELL, apple and Acer. According to the report, global PC shipments in the third quarter were 67.2 million, up only 0.1% from the same period last year.
Microsoft's Surface line has been a commercial success since its first launch in 2012. In the first quarter of this year, Microsoft said Surface revenue grew 25% to $1.1 billion from a year earlier, with revenue exceeding the $1 billion mark for the first time. Earlier this month, Microsoft released the latest upgrades to its product lines, including Surface Pro 6, Surface Laptop 2, and Surface Studio 2, as well as the first Surface Headphone smart headphones.
