At yesterday's 2018 Fortune Global Science and Technology Forum, Lenovo Group CEO Yang Yuanqing

Yang Yuanqing, CEO of Lenovo Group, pointed out that data, computing power and algorithms are the three core elements to promote the development of artificial intelligence. Lenovo is an enterprise with these three core elements. Their latest clear strategy is to develop businesses around smart change.

In Yang Yuanqing's view, the drive of artificial intelligence has brought three major development trends to the industry.

The first intelligent Internet of Things terminal will be a major development trend. He points out that more of the future impact will be in the vertical industry. For example, machine tools, even X-ray machines and CT machines in hospitals, were not very intelligent in the past, but in the future, with the smart module, chips and protocols, they will generate intelligence.

Yang Yuanqing, for example,

He believes that smart terminals in the past weren't smart enough, and that PC wasn't always online. Therefore association

The second is the smart infrastructure. In the past, servers, storage and network devices could only be used by one application, and their utilization rate was very low.

For the new IT in the future, we believe that it is software-defined infrastructure. The data center, application and device layers defined by software can be separated. All these devices, regardless of computing servers, storage, and network, can be shared by all applications. This is a development trend of intelligent infrastructure.

Around the area of smart infrastructure, Lenovo is building four engines, including a supercomputing engine and an engine for cloud computing infrastructure. Six of the top 10 cloud computing companies in the world are already Lenovo customers.

Yang Yuanqing also pointed out that Lenovo's bigger development direction in the future is in the direction of To B.

To B is a broader prospect. In the past, many devices that are not intelligent will become intelligent, but it needs to be embedded in intelligent modules, smart chips and smart protocols. We hope to turn this into a service business that can empower all walks of life. Lenovo also has the idea of developing intelligent IoT devices in the medical industry.

Following is a dialogue record from all-weather science and technology.

Strategies in the Intelligent Age

Murray Lan: Lenovo is back at the top of the PC market, but PC sales can't represent 100% of the future. Today we talk about how artificial intelligence and the Internet of Things will change Lenovo's business and the whole industry.

Yang Yuanqing: We believe that the three main factors that drive AI forward are data, computing power and algorithms, which are all going hand in hand.

The development of the Internet has brought more and more data. With the development of the Intelligent Internet of Things, there are more and more devices in the Intelligent Internet of Things, and more and more data are generated. It's like a fuel for AI. There's a lot of fuel now.

Another aspect is the improvement of computing power, which includes two aspects, one is the development of high-performance computing, the other is the development of algorithms and large data.

Murray Lan: At present Lenovo is mainly doing B2B business model. How fast do you think the company adopts Internet of Things and artificial intelligence algorithms today?

Yang Yuanqing: It should be said that it is very fast. In our industry, driven by artificial intelligence, there are three major development trends.

The first is the development of Intelligent Internet of Things, not only smart terminals such as smart phones, but also the latest intelligent audio, intelligent display and so on. In the past, many non-intelligent devices have embedded intelligent modules, and the air conditioners, refrigerators and washing machines in the house can be interconnected. But in fact, in the future, more impact will be in the vertical industry, in some areas of business, such as machine tools, even X-ray machines and CT machines in hospitals, which were not very intelligent in the past, but in the future, with the smart module, chips and protocols, they will generate intelligence.

Recently, we cooperated with the blower factory in Shaanxi Province. With the addition of intelligent modules, we can real-time monitor the use of blowers, so that they have changed their business model. I believe that the terminal of the Intelligent Internet of Things is a big development trend.

One of our bigger developments is in the direction of To B. To B is a broader prospect. In the past, many devices that are not intelligent will become intelligent, but it needs to be embedded in intelligent modules, smart chips and smart protocols. We hope to turn this into a service business that can empower all walks of life. Shaanxi Blower Factory just mentioned is a good example. We also have an idea to develop intelligent IoT equipment in the medical industry.

Murray Lan: How do these trends change Lenovo?

Yang Yuanqing: It's very coincidental that Lenovo is an enterprise with all three elements of AI in companies around the world. We have also recently defined our strategy to develop our business around smart change.

The first is along the development path of the Intelligent Internet of Things. In the past, the so-called smart terminals, in fact, some of them are still not smart enough, such as PC. PC is not always online, we should first make it an IoT, and then add the ability of natural language interaction, you can communicate with it, it can see you, you can brush your face, you can listen to you, even understand you, recommend some applications for your intelligence, better provide personality. Chemical services.

The second part I just mentioned is that we have done a lot of work around the smart infrastructure. Perhaps all you know is that Lenovo is the world's number one in the field of PC. In fact, we are also the world's number one in the field of high-performance computing. We are now in the world's top 500 supercomputers, the latest data is 140 Lenovo built, they are providing artificial intelligence protection, services. Lenovo built the fastest computers in Germany, Italy, Spain, Canada, Denmark and Norway.

We are now building four engines in the area of smart infrastructure, including supercomputing engines and cloud computing infrastructure engines. Six of the top 10 cloud computing companies in the world are already Lenovo's customers. This is our effort to build computing power.

Third, in vertical industry and retail, we are all building more complete solutions, but these complete solutions will include IOT and computing power, and combine algorithmic and big data industries to create overall solutions. That's three things Lenovo is doing.

Three changes of Lenovo

Murray Lan: How do you drive such rapid change and innovation in such a large company?

Yang Yuanqing: We have also experienced several years of pain. In the past 4-5 years, Lenovo has changed from product-oriented to customer-oriented, from single business to IoT, computing power, vertical industry solutions, multi-business companies, including cultural changes. In the past, we have all experienced great pain. Experience. But if a company wants to develop continuously, it must have a higher goal and a mission to push you forward. This mission is intelligent change.

Murray Lan: Your career is amazing. Lenovo started with a small company and became the No. 1 company of PC, one of the four major mobile phone manufacturers. Now there are a lot of Internet of Things, Artificial Intelligence and B2B companies. What experience do you have in developing enterprises?

Yang Yuanqing: If an enterprise wants to develop into a century-old shop, there will be many ditches and barricades. In fact, Lenovo has been reforming for 34 years, almost every 10 years. The first 10 years is acting as an agent for external products. Around 1990, we began to make our own brand computers. I started to lead Lenovo's personal computer business in 1994. After 10 years of development, we became the first in the Chinese market.

After that, we were not satisfied with our own development and wanted to become a global company, so we bought IBM's PC in 2004. After buying, we rank third and fourth in the world, but after ten years of development, we will become No. 1 in the global PC market by 2013.

After that, we were wondering where to go next. We are bound to develop diversified business. This diversified business just catches up with the tide of intellectualization. So there is what I said before. We are developing IoT around intellectualized change, developing intelligent infrastructure, and developing intelligent solutions for vertical industries, which is a development direction.

A great inspiration to me is that if an enterprise wants to develop continuously, there are three points that are very important: first, it is necessary to set more ambitious goals. If you climb a mountain, you must see a higher peak; second, the way to climb a mountain before is different from that of climbing a mountain after. You need to have a good one. Learning spirit; the last point is to have perseverance and perseverance, do not turn around when you meet the South wall, persevere until the end can see the dawn of victory.

Murray Lan: I think you are the first global CEO of China. Lenovo's business is global. Ten years ago, many people thought this was the direction of the world's development. Now many people think that globalization is somewhat ebbing. What do you think?

Yang Yuanqing: That's 100% correct. Lenovo has been in the process of globalization since 2005. It has been a relatively early step in Chinese enterprises. We have successfully acquired IBM's PC business and made full use of this global resource, not only to sell products to the world, but also to use global R&D resources and global manufacturing bases. Serve the global market, which makes Lenovo's business very international. Seventy percent of our business is outside China, and we are the beneficiaries of globalization. I still believe that globalization will continue.

Murray Lan: Has Lenovo's business been affected?

Yang Yuanqing: We can see our recent performance. We are still growing, not only in China, but also in other markets all over the world. This is also due to the trend of globalization. We hope that this trend will continue.

Murray Lan: Are you a Chinese company or an American company, jumping around in the past decade or so?

Yang Yuanqing: Lenovo is a global company rooted in China. We are not only satisfied with the products we create and design in China, and the products we produce and manufacture are sold to the global market. We also hope to develop our products with the good resources of global research and development. We have R&D and manufacturing bases in Japan, Germany, Brazil and India, so this is what we call a true concept of globalization, which is global and global.

Murray Lan: You've worked in the United States and China. What's the difference between your personal feelings? Especially in terms of technology.

Yang Yuanqing: I think in the past, Chinese companies may be more concerned about the innovation of business models, and more ahead of them. The basic technology, including chip technology, especially B2B software technology, is still relatively backward, but the development of this industry in China is only 10 years.

Murray Lan: Shen Nanpeng also said this morning that China is leading the United States in developing consumer technology, and the United States is leading China in B2B technology. Do you agree with this view?

Yang Yuanqing: I think China really lags behind the United States in many aspects of technology. We still have a long way to go, especially in the field of chips, including the application software of large enterprises, including algorithms, databases and so on. On the one hand, we should not be self-confident and complacent. But on the other hand, we shouldn't underestimate ourselves. In fact, China still has many advantages in developing intellectualization.

Data is a great advantage of Chinese enterprises. We have a large population and many equipment providers. We can generate a lot of data, whether it is data of users using equipment, data of applications, or data of medical treatment, etc. These are our advantages.

In terms of algorithms, big data and so on, we may lag behind some American companies, but you can also see that companies like Lenovo are also striving to rise and develop these technologies. We hope that Chinese and American enterprises can compete in a benign competitive environment and promote the development of the whole technology.
