The more frames it needs to process, the more information it can extract for details that are too small for a single pixel at normal resolution. It can use this information and calculations of edges, planes, and detail areas to make very informed guesses about what happens at sub-pixel resolutions, building more detailed photos on a 12-megapixel sensor than it should be.
