Although everyone in the United States can now register as a blood donor on Facebook, only those living in these five cities can receive an upcoming blood donation notice. The rest of the country will have to wait a few months to receive a blood donation request from Facebook. Registering on Facebook does not guarantee that users can donate blood. Facebook is only a function of donating blood on behalf of users. People still need to go to the local blood donation center to make an appointment to confirm whether they are eligible for blood donation.
Now, the recognized blood donation centers, such as the American Red Cross, Vitalant and the New York Blood Center, can send Facebook notifications about blood donation sites via Facebook and indicate what type of blood is most needed. These notifications will be sent to those who tell Facebook that they are willing to donate blood, and Facebook will use the location or profile of those users to determine which blood center is most convenient for blood donation.
