On May 28, 2018, the China Manned Space Engineering Office and the United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs jointly announced the cooperation opportunities announcement, inviting UN member states to participate in the future international cooperation of space science applications of the China Space Station. The selection of cooperation projects was jointly implemented by the China Manned Space Engineering Office and the United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs.
In the selection process, 42 projects from 27 countries and regions including Asia, Africa, Europe and America were received in the initial selection stage. A total of 258 team members from 72 project cooperation teams. The content covers nine fields, including aerospace medicine, aerospace technology, space life science and biotechnology, and space astronomy, representing different research fields and technical levels.
At the beginning of 2019, the China Manned Space Engineering Office and the United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs Cooperative Space Station Application Project Evaluation and Selection Committee reviewed and determined that a total of 18 projects entered the final stage. Lin Xiqiang, deputy director of the China Manned Space Engineering Office and a spokesman for the manned spaceflight project, recently introduced the criteria for project selection to the media in Beijing, which is in line with the UN's basic principles for the peaceful use of outer space. It has outstanding scientific significance and can greatly promote relevant scientific and technological fields. [Three modes of cooperation with foreign science teams]
According to Lin Xiqiang, there are three main modes of cooperation with foreign scientific teams. One is the actual (test) inspection device independently or jointly developed by the Chinese side, installed in the reserved international cooperation cabinet space, and the actual (test) inspection and application. The implementation of the space station construction phase begins with the external experimental units and samples being launched with the cabin or with the cargo spacecraft.
Third, the foreign party independently or cooperates with the Chinese side to develop the extra-vehicle load, install it on the reserved extra-vehicle load adapter, and carry out the corresponding test (real) inspection and application. The in-cabin support equipment required for international cooperation in extra-vehicular loads shall be arranged in the international cooperation cabinet space reserved for the experimental cabin I and the experimental cabin II. The external extravehicular load is installed in the orbit after the cargo ship is ascended in the operational phase of the space station.
Lin Xiqiang said that in the future space station mission, China’s manned space flight will actively carry out international exchanges and cooperation in various aspects such as equipment development, space application, astronaut training, joint flight and space medicine in a more open manner. Countries around the world, especially developing countries, share the fruits of China’s manned space development.
Regarding whether there will be other national astronauts entering the Chinese space station and conducting space experiments in the future, Lin Xiqiang told the Global Times reporter that this time mainly provides space experiments for scientists from all over the world to provide space stations for the world. China Space Station development and construction in an orderly manner
Lin Xiqiang said that the development and construction of the China Space Station is currently under way, and it is planned to be completed and put into use around 2022. Lv Congmin, deputy chief designer of the space application system, said that the relevant scientific research facilities of the China Space Station are being intensified, and the development is progressing smoothly. The China Space Station plans to deploy 16 scientific laboratory cabinets, extra-vehicle exposure experimental platforms and common-orbiting optical cabins in the sealed cabin to support space astronomy, space life science and biotechnology, microgravity basic physics, and space materials science. Hundreds of scientific research and application projects in more than 30 research topics in 11 disciplines such as aerospace medicine. Sixteen scientific laboratory cabinets will be installed in the core cabin, the experimental cabin I and the experimental cabin II respectively. According to the introduction, after the project is selected, China will make overall plans according to the development and implementation progress of various projects of the China Space Station. Lu Congmin said, "We will provide real (test) inspection and space station operation opportunities, as well as support services such as measurement and control, recycling, etc. for the selected projects. We will use the experimental cabinets on the space station, the experimental cabin I and the experimental cabin II.
