China's space station may be the only space station in the world in the future. Will it reject American research projects?

On June 12, the China Manned Space Engineering Office and the United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs jointly announced that nine projects from 17 countries and 23 entities were successfully selected into the first batch of scientific experiments of the China Space Station. This is China’s manned spaceflight project. Large-scale international cooperation for the first time through the United Nations. Nine projects will focus on human health under long-term space flight conditions, fluid physics and combustion laws under microgravity conditions, cosmic observations, and new materials. How are these 9 projects selected? What are the stories behind the first large-scale international cooperation of the China Space Station?

9 projects successfully selected

In March 2016, when Tiangong 2 was not launched, the China Manned Space Engineering Office signed a Memorandum of Understanding on International Cooperation with the Chinese Space Station with the United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs, and agreed to use the China Space Station to provide scientific experiments for countries. Opportunity, and in the future to provide in-orbit flight opportunities for other national astronauts or load experts.

In May 2018, the China Manned Space Engineering Office and the United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs jointly issued a cooperation opportunity announcement to the UN member states, inviting member states to participate in the space science application around the China Space Station. After the announcement, a total of 42 project proposals from 27 countries were received.

Through the preliminary selection screening and review of the project evaluation and selection committee, 9 projects including space tumor and nebula gas spectrum research were successfully selected.

Zhou Jianping, chief designer of China’s manned spaceflight project:

We do not limit the number of options, but do require quality and feasibility. For example, some projects we think do not need to go to space to do, can do it on the ground, space is a very precious resource after all.

Provide a free trial opportunity

The China Space Station will provide the project applicants with free uplink launch and space station operation opportunities, as well as support services such as measurement and control, recycling, etc. R&D funding will be borne by the project applicant.

reporter:They use our place to experiment in the sky, do not collect money?

Zhou Jianping, chief designer of China’s manned spaceflight project:Do not collect money.

reporter:We spent so much money, why not pay their money?

Zhou Jianping, chief designer of China’s manned spaceflight project:This is a mutually beneficial cooperation and the results can be shared. Many of the scientific research is oriented to important scientific issues, not for business purposes. A European team has proposed a mechanism to study the growth of tumor cells in a space environment, which is related to human health.

Once rejected, the door is now open.

In the 1990s, 16 countries including the United States and Russia, including Canada, Japan, Brazil and ESA, participated in the development of the International Space Station. When planning the construction, China applied to join, but was rejected.

Zhou Jianping, chief designer of China’s manned spaceflight project:

China is very willing to participate in international cooperation, but in terms of aerospace technology, countries like the United States are not allowed to cooperate with China. At that time, China’s space technology was still far behind. In international cooperation, strength has the right to speak.

After being rejected by the International Space Station, China embarked on a difficult road to build its own space station. In 2017, the Tianzhou-1 cargo spacecraft successfully docked with the Tiangong No. 2 Space Laboratory and successfully completed the first propellant on-orbit addition experiment, marking the completion of the space station cargo transportation system in China, and officially opened the China Space Station. The door of the times & rdquo;. With the development of international cooperation projects, this door will also be open to the world.

reporter:Why don't we refuse now, but open the door early?

Zhou Jianping, chief designer of China’s manned spaceflight project:We should not do it with reference to their values and standards. The very clear goal of China's development of manned space technology is that we must use space peacefully and promote the building of a community of human destiny.

reporter:When we choose the purpose, does it exclude projects from the United States?

Chief Engineer of China Manned Space Engineering Zhou Jianping:We do not exclude any country, nor do we limit any scope, and there are projects in which the US team participates in the declaration. In terms of scientific value and technical considerations, US projects have not met the required standards.

China Space Station may be the only space station in the future world

In the future, China's manned space flight will carry out international exchanges and cooperation with a more open attitude, and welcome more partners to join the “Friends Circle” of China's manned space cooperation, sharing the achievements of China's manned space development with the rest of the world.

It is foreseeable that if the International Space Station does not extend its useful life, it is likely to retire in 2024. In other words, in the future, the China Space Station may be the only space station in the world.

Zhou Jianping said that resources will be more valuable at that time, and scientists will have fewer opportunities to choose. China's space station is built for scientific research and application. Through this cooperation, our influence will gradually become larger, and more scientists will participate in the scientific research work of our space station. Fully share knowledge, share technology, share scientific research results, and use limited funds more efficiently.

reporter:Will we train astronauts abroad in the future?

Zhou Jianping, chief designer of China’s manned spaceflight project:Will do.

reporter:Will they be sent to space?

Zhou Jianping, chief designer of China’s manned spaceflight project:Yes, many countries have expressed their wishes in this regard.
