The new system, called "El Capitan," will be a billion-dollar secondary supercomputer, referring to a system that can perform at least quittillion calculations per second, which is thought to mimic the human brain. According to Cray, El Capitan is able to perform 1.5 quintillion calculations per second, enabling advanced artificial intelligence and modeling capabilities.

Cray CEO Peter Ungaro said in a telephone briefing with reporters that El Capitan will be seven times faster than the world's top supercomputers and more powerful than the world's fastest top 100 systems. US government officials say scientists need these computing powers to ensure that US nuclear weapons remain deterrent without underground nuclear testing.
