Google is now announcing that DoH is officially available and fully supports the RFC 8484 documentation, while continuing to provide support for the 2016 JSON API. Users can resolve DNS using DoH in the dns.google domain, which contains the same anycast address as the regular DNS service, such as 8.8.8.8. The new access portal is:

Google also said it is abandoning the previous /experimental URL path and Internet draft DoH support from dns.google.com and will end their support within a few months. "With Google Public DNS, we are committed to providing fast, private and secure DNS resolution through DoH and DNS over TLS (DoT)," Google said. "We plan to support the JSON API until there is a webapp-friendly DoH standard. ”

For developers to use the GA version of the DoH service, they need to configure their application to use the new DoH access portal and properly handle HTTP 4xx errors and 3xx redirect status codes, as follows:

  • Apps need to use dns.google instead of dns.google.com. You can query dns.google directly in the Google Public DNS address without an additional DNS query.

  • Developers using the old /experimental Internet Draft DoH API need to switch to the new /dns-query URL path and confirm the full RFC 8484 compliance. Older APIs accept queries using features in the early drafts of the DoH standard, which are rejected by the new API.

  • Developers using the JSON API can use two new GET parameters that can be used for DNS/DoH proxy or DNSSEC-aware applications.
