DTP provides an interface for a small group of standardized data formats so that they can be converted from the proprietary APIs of any service, and data transmission can be achieved using standards such as OAuth. Current prototype products have supported data transmission of multiple vertical products, including photos, emails, contacts, calendars and tasks. These are implemented through the existing public APIs of Google, Microsoft, Twitter, Flickr, Instagram, Remember the Milk and Smug.

With DTP, Apple will build a new system that will allow users to add and delete data for iCloud, similar to Google Takeout and Facebook Access Your Information tools. The ultimate goal of DTP is to allow data to be easily and freely transferred between different services.
