Samsung's development of self luminous qled technology may surpass OLED

In the last decade, display panel technology has made great progress and development.

Manufacturers have also been trying to create the next generation of panel technology with clearer images and faster response times.

After OLED rose and established its market position, qled, micro led and other technologies followed closely, vowing to compete for their own market.

Samsung's own QLED display technology is still based on a combination of LED backlight quantum dots display panels.

Although such a combination can emit more solid colors than the traditional LED, the quantum dot itself will not emit light.

As a contrast OLED technology, its own pixels can emit light, so it can turn off a single pixel, rather than the whole illumination area.

Under further research and development, Samsung qled technology is also expected to introduce the characteristics of this similar OLED technology.

Recently, according to foreign media reports, researcher eunjoo Jang and Dr. Yu ho won of Samsung Institute of advanced technology published a paper in the scientific journal Nature, saying that the new quantum dot LED technology has a breakthrough, and they have found an improved and more environmentally friendly manufacturing method of self luminous qled.

Previously, the qled display used cadmium material which is harmful to human body. In the future, Samsung may replace toxic cadmium materials with InP, and improve the quantum dot structure, so as to prolong the life of qled module and maximize the quantum efficiency.

It is understood that the R & D team led by Dr. eunjoo Jang and Dr. yo ho won will improve the structure of Indium Phosphate diode by building an oxidation resistant shell around it and shortening the shell.

Experiments show that this method can improve the efficiency by more than 21% and prolong the lifetime of diode by 1 million hours.

Although such an improvement does not bring about great performance, at least it will be more environment-friendly.


In fact, as early as October this year, Samsung officially announced that it would spend a total of 11 billion dollars to produce qled displays by 2025.

At the same time, Samsung will abandon some LCD panel manufacturing and use the 11 billion US dollars to improve a Samsung LCD production line in South Korea, so as to change the production line into an advanced qled production line.

In addition, Samsung convenience also revealed that it plans to launch its own luminous qled panel in 2025.

After the success of Samsung's self luminous qled, OLED may lose its dominant position in the panel market.

According to industry analysis, Samsung's self luminous QLD technology may become a decisive part of Samsung's flagship TV and display screen in the future. If this new self luminous QLD technology is put into commercial use, consumers can enjoy bright and vivid image quality comparable to OLED.

Once Samsung's self luminous qled is successful, it will be a big threat to OLED, which is quite mature in the current panel market.

In addition to Samsung being the first to bear the brunt, the research and development of self luminous QLDS competes for a larger panel market.

As the largest panel production enterprise in China

In fact,BOE has been actively developing new panel technology, including mini LED technology and micro LED technology.

Mini led and micro led, as the name implies, are two screens divided according to the size of LED units. They are much smaller than traditional LED.

Micro LED unit is less than 100 μ m, mini LED unit is between traditional LED and micro led, in the range of 100-200 μ M.

But in fact,Micro LED is actually superior to mini led. Micro LED is a new display technology, with thinner backlight and smaller volume, and micro led also has self luminous characteristics.

The mini LED is just a transition product between micro led and led, which is an improved version of traditional LED backlight. In essence, the display principle is based on LCD backlight.


But even if it is a transitional product, mini LED technology will also usher in an explosion in the next two to three years, which may be the future development direction of the panel industry in the near future.

Even apple has heard that it will use a mini LED screen on devices like next year's iPad and MacBook.

This may sound a little different, but for apple, the mini LED is an affordable choice for the high-end products, as well as an attempt at innovation.

In fact, the continuous R & D and improvement of mini led by many enterprises, such as BOE and apple, further shows the huge potential and broad prospects of mini led in the future.



Although as far as the whole panel market is concerned, OLED is in a dominant position that cannot be shaken.

And whether it is the industry or the outside audience, OLED is very optimistic.

However, it has to be said that with the continuous and rapid development of panel technology, such as qled, micro led and other technologies will follow closely. At that time, it is really not clear which is stronger or weaker. All the success or failure will still be determined by the market and consumers.
