In early October, Intel open source engineers submitted 22 Linux kernel mailing listsUSB4 patchTo provide basic USB4 support for the Linux kernel. This support will be officially introduced into the Linux kernel in version 5.6.

The initial support for Linux 5.6 kernel includes host and device support, as well as PCIe tunneling, DisplayPort tunneling, USB 3. X tunneling, P2P network and host / device NVM firmware upgrade, etc.

Since the existing USB / thunderbolt code of the kernel is used, only 2000 lines of new kernel code are needed, which is written by Intel open source department.

Linux 5.6 is expected to launch stable USB4 support for the first time at the end of March or early April next year. It may be too late to introduce it into Ubuntu 20.04, but at least it should be included in Fedora 32 and other versions.

USB4 standard released in September this yearBecause of the use of thunderbolt 3 protocol authorized by Intel, the speed has been greatly improved. The bandwidth of the new version is twice that of USB 3.2, and the performance of USB type-C has been expanded. The rated throughput of USB4 is 40 Gbit / s. since 2020, some USB4 devices should appear in succession.
