According to Taiwan's economic daily, citing supply information, TSMC is once again the exclusive supplier of customized iPhone SOC chip design for apple, and will start mass production of A14 chip at the end of the second quarter and the beginning of the third quarter of 2020. If not surprisingly, this will be the first SOC adopting TSMC 5nm process technology.

According to previous internal information of TSMC, the new 5nm process will be fully adoptedExtreme ultraviolet (EUV) lithography, has taken into account factors such as efficiency and cost. The trial production results show that the number of SOC transistors in the new process is 1.8 times of 7Nm, the operation speed can be increased by 15%, and the yield can be maintained at 80% ~ 90%. In contrast, Samsung, which has been "tit for tat" with TSMC in recent years, although it has been quietly catching up with TSMC in recent years, it can hardly be compared with the former in terms of the number of transistors or power consumption efficiency.

At present, TSMC's 5nm process technology has attracted the attention of many first-line manufacturers including apple, Huawei Hisilicon, Qualcomm, etc., but Apple will probably continue to win the "first round".

August 2018,Although Huawei first released Kirin 980 chip with 7Nm process, the iPhone XS released by apple in September of the same year became the first mobile phone with 7Nm process chip. The same goes for last year's iPhone 11 series, which went on sale six days before the Huawei Mate 30 series, which uses the 7nm EUV craft A13 chip.

In addition to the 5nm-based A14 chip, Apple's new iPhone is expected to have more bright spots this fall. For example, the middle frame uses graphic design similar to the iPhone 4, has 5G communication capability, the high-end model joins the ToF3D camera, the screen display technology upgrade and so on
