Apple's new patent shows that Apple pencil can provide tactile feedback in the future

Future versions of Apple pencil may include a system that provides a vibrating experience for the user's fingertips while holding the stylus, as well as detecting how the user holds the device. At present, Apple's stylus doesn't use tactile feedback, in part because users want to keep full control of the stylus. At the same time, apple pencil is a very small device with almost no spare space for the tactile feedback system.

The USPTO on Tuesday granted apple a patent for a touch based input device with tactile feedback. The patent document details how the system can be used to perform two tasks: providing tactile feedback to the user, while also being able to read the grip strength from the user. Apple's proposal involves the use of a piezoelectric device that connects to the inside of the enclosure and to the user grip area of the enclosure. The gripping part can be deformed inward and outward, so that it can be used to provide information to users and obtain gripping data.

When the piezoelectric device needs to alert the user through tactile feedback, it will theoretically push out the shell in the holding area. The action does not depend on vibration and disturbance, but on how the touch sense detects the subtle action, so only a small deformation is needed to deliver the message to the user. In Apple's proposal, there may be multiple piezoelectric devices around the circumference that allow them to provide tactile feedback in multiple different locations, including changes in the way users hold the stylus.

At the same time, the piezoelectric device will be able to read the magnitude of the force applied to it by the user's hand. This can help to tell the system user how to hold the stylus, so as to better determine the area to be deformed and carry out tactile message transmission without disturbing the drawing movement. Finally, apple recommends tactile feedback to alert users to interface elements, such as the edges of buttons in an application, the presence of icons, or areas in which users can write or draw.

Apple submits a large number of patent applications every week, so there is no guarantee that the patent will appear in future products or services.
