Starting today, Mozilla will enable DNS encryption for Firefox users in the United States through HTTPS (DOH) by default.Doh is a new standard, which can encrypt a part of Internet traffic that is usually sent through unencrypted plain text connection. Even if you use HTTPS to encrypt the communication with the website itself, you can also make others see the website you are visiting. Mozilla said it was the first browser to support the new standard by default and will gradually roll out in the next few weeks to solve any unforeseen problems.

Whenever a user enters a website address in the address bar, the browser needs to perform a procedure to convert it to an IP address using a DNS lookup. However, this traffic is typically not encrypted, meaning that others can view the sites that users are visiting. DoH tries to encrypt the information to protect your privacy. Mozilla's approach is motivated in part by ISPs that monitor customer network usage. Like Verizon and AT

Although it is difficult for others to see your DNS lookup with DOH enabled, these sites are still visible to the DNS server to which the user's browser is connected. As a result, Mozilla said Firefox will provide two trusted DNS providers (cloudflare and nextdns) and cloudflare will be used as the default. Mozilla outlines a set of privacy requirements that any DOH provider must comply with to be considered a trusted parser.

Mozilla claims that DOH can improve the privacy and security of online users, but the technology has been fiercely criticized by lawmakers and security experts, who say it will prevent enterprise system administrators and legislators from legally blocking dangerous web content. Experts also claim that the technology does not provide the perfect privacy protection that supporters claim. They warn that Internet service providers will still be able to see the IP addresses to which their users are connected only if some parts of the DNS lookup process are encrypted.
