Tesla and the American Highway Safety Insurance Association (IIHS) announced on Twitter on Wednesday that Model 3 won the 2020 IIHS Top Safety Pick highest safety award. What's more, model 3 is the only electric vehicle to win the highest safety award of IIHS, and the only American made vehicle to win this honor.
In order to win the award, a vehicle must be rated "good" in six crashworthiness assessments, including driver side small overlap front, passenger side small overlap front, medium overlap front, side, roof strength and head restraint tests. Moreover, the headlights must also be rated "good", which is particularly challenging for many automakers.
IIHS noted that only 64 vehicles entered the agency's 2020 IIHS Top Safety Pick and Top Safety Pick list. Of the 64 cars, only 23 won the agency's top safety award Top Safety Pick, one of which is Model 3..
IIHS president David Harkey explained that vehicles with a "rating are relatively rare, in part because of the firm's rigorous headlamp assessment.
Previously, in September 2019, Model 3 also won the Top Safety Pick. of the IIHS's highest safety award this award is a huge victory for tesla, again proving that Model 3 is one of the safest cars on the road today. Moreover, Model 3 became the second pure electric vehicle to win the award after Audi e-tron won the award last August.
Last August, Audi e-tron SUV beat Tesla Model s and Chevrolet bolt to become the first electric vehicle to win the highest safety award of IIHS in 2019.
In addition to winning the highest security award of IIHS, model 3, together with model s, was again recommended by the consumer report last November.
According to the consumer report, they surveyed 420000 vehicles, including nearly 4000 Tesla vehicles. The results of the survey showed that the reliability of model 3 and model s had been improved, so the magazine restored the "recommended" rating of the two vehicles. Previously, the magazine had cancelled the recommendation of the two models for reliability reasons.
