Vulkan announced support for ray tracing: compatible with Microsoft ray tracing amd / Intel / NV

Vulkan promotion organization Khronos group tonight announced Vulkan's ray tracing technology, which will be the industry's first cross platform and cross system open ray tracing API. AMD, NVIDIA and Intel also announced their support in the first time.

Since the launch of Turing GPU in NVIDIA 2018, the PC platform has supported real-time optical pursuit for two years, and this year, with the new host supporting optical pursuit, the release of AMD's RDNA2 graphics card, the full popularity of optical pursuit technology is within reach.

Previously, light tracing was based mainly on Windows platforms, using DXR light tracing standards in microsoft's DX specifications, and AMD and NVIDIA would develop their own light tracing solutions.

Vulkan, compared with microsoft's DX12 specification, has been popular in recent years because of its cross-platform features, with almost Windows other platforms, including android, but previously Vulkan did not support optical tracking.

Khronos Group have set up the RayTracingTask Sub Group since 2018 to advance the work of light pursuit technology can come up with its own light pursuit scheme.

However, due to its cross platform characteristics, Vulkan's optical tracking technology is expected to become the most popular in the future. And Khronos group announced that it will be compatible with Microsoft's DXR optical tracking technology, which is convenient for developers to transplant. Therefore, developers are allowed to use HLSL Shader Language to create Vulkan's ray tracking spir-v shader.
