According New Atlas foreign media, America's Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has recently changed its advice by advising Americans to wear cloth masks in public places such as pharmacies and grocery stores. CDC said the new proposal was aimed primarily at reducing the spread of COVID-19, which some might not know they had.
U.S. President trump announced new U.S. federal guidelines at a White House press conference on Friday. The CDC said the new recommendations are being influenced by growing scientific evidence that covid-19 can be transmitted through asymptomatic infections and those who are infected but have not yet developed symptoms.
According to the new CDC guidance:
Over the past week, experts have debated the topic of wearing masks. Some believe that, given the growing evidence of asymptomatic transmission, large-scale population wearing masks may reduce the level of community transmission. However, other experts have expressed concern that masks can create a false sense of security, leading to the wearer relaxing social isolation measures and general health habits.
It is this particular concern that seems to have caused the World Health Organization to delay making general recommendations for wearing masks. The Executive Director of the WHO Health Emergency Project, Michael Ryan, reiterated this at a recent press conference.
At the White House briefing to announce the new guidelines, Trump stressed that this is not a mandatory requirement, but a voluntary proposal.
