Tencent technology news, according to foreign media reports, Google recently confirmed that the company has officially renamed hangouts chat to Google chat, thus removing the hangouts brand from its corporate g suite products.

Before the name change, Google also changed its video conference application hangout meet to Google meet.

The latest Rename is first shown in an updated g suite support document. This document lists Google chat next to Google meet. Of course, don't confuse this version of chat app Google chat with another version of chat app hangouts chat. The new name Google chat reveals its relatively new Android message protocol based on RCS.

As for the Hangouts brand, it will continue to exist as the name of the consumer chat app. Google stripped Hangouts out of its now closed social network Google in 2013 as a Gchat upgrade. A Google spokesman told reporters:

In the past seven years or so, this has been a long and tortuous road for hangouts. The product has never been as prestigious as gchat. Google's often confusing and misleading messaging strategy also means that hangouts is always competing with nearly six other chat and video messaging applications that Google has been insisting on for years.
