The survey, conducted between early May and mid-May, involved more than 4,000 American adults. CDC use of census data to target representative populations by category of race, age and sex. Of the more than 2000 adults who analyzed the data, CDC found that about 80% supported COVID-19 preventive measures. According to the CDC report, 74% of people are in favor of wearing masks in public, 88% are in favor of keeping social distance, and 82% are in favor of avoiding group gathering activities of more than 10 people. In particular, respondents from New York and Los Angeles had the highest approval ratings for these measures.

In addition, the CDC said more than 74 percent of respondents said they would feel unsafe if the restrictions were lifted, 77 percent said they would isolate themselves, and 84 percent said their state's prevention efforts were either just right or inadequate. Of course, the CDC points out that these responses are based on participants' feelings from the beginning of May to the middle of May.
