On June 30, McDonald's China announced today that it would gradually stop using plastic straws, and a new cup cap without straw was unveiled. It is reported that this is the first environmental protection measure announced by McDonald's following the new brand concept of "do what is best because of love" in May this year. It is reported that since June 30, nearly 1000 restaurants in Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou and Shenzhen have taken the lead in the implementation of in-house food and takeout. Consumers can directly drink cold drinks (such as coke) without solids through the new cup lid. The relevant plastic reduction measures will cover all restaurants in mainland China by 2020. By then, it is expected to reduce the plastic consumption by about 400 tons per year.
Zhang Jiayin, chief executive of McDonald's China, said that McDonald's love is not only about delicious food and service, but also for the community and environment where we live, striving to build a "beautiful China". We believe that taking advantage of McDonald's scale and reducing straws can also become a "big step" for sustainable development.
It is understood that in 2007, McDonald's took the lead in replacing plastic bags with paper bags, reducing by more than 2.5 billion plastic bags; in 2010, wheat whirlwind changed to paper cup packaging, reducing more than 500 million plastic cups; in 2015, the size of knives and forks was optimized, reducing the plastic consumption by about 10%.
In 2020, 100% of McDonald's paper packaging comes from the original paper certified by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC).
