How hard is it for Tesla Model 3 owners to protect their rights?

Tesla is standing in the wind again.

This time it wasn't about tesla prices

The incident was caused by an article recently published on Zhihu by a Tesla Model 3 owner: the owner claimed that he was on Nanping Expressway in Shenzhen at 3:00 p.m. on June 24, when he encountered a muck truck changing lanes on the road, model 3 accelerated instead of avoiding it, resulting in a collision.

According to the description of the owner:

What he didn't understand and angry about was that the FSD function of Tesla couldn't be recognized for such a tall muck truck? When a dump truck changes lanes, it's ok if you don't brake, but model 3 speeds up and crashes in the past.

On July 6, Tesla China officials responded: according to data retrieved from the background, the owner's hands were off the steering wheel at the time of the accident, and no brake signal was detected.

Previously, in the chat record with the owner, Tesla also repeatedly said: FSD hardware, data analysis is not abnormal.

However, in an interview with leifeng.com, the owner denied this. He said that because Tesla steering wheel has a mechanism similar to gravity detection, if his hands leave the steering wheel for one or two minutes, the vehicle will prompt the user to hold the steering wheel.

He said that if Tesla still does not respond positively to the technical reasons for the automatic driving acceleration muck truck and the subsequent improvement plan for this problem, he will continue to use legal means to protect his rights.

The ghost truck

From the rights article, the owner of the end of August 2019, bought the imported white full wheel drive version Model 3, and spent an additional 56000 yuan to buy the claim

On Tesla's website, it can also be seen that the FSD suite has the basic version of assisted driving function and fully automatic driving function.

The former can assist in steering, accelerating and braking according to other vehicles and pedestrians in the driving lane, while the latter can realize automatic parking, lane changing, navigation assistance and intelligent calling.

But in the actual year of using the car, the owner claimed that he had encountered several ghost brakes and couldn't identify the ice cream cone.

Even though he laughed at himself

According to the dash cam issued by the owner of the vehicle on June 24, there was an obstacle in front of the right lane at that time, so the muck truck on the right side made a normal lane change under the condition of dotted line. However, model 3 did not slow down to give way, accelerating into the muck truck on the right.

He's had a car cut in the past. According to his experience, Model 3 generally have two processing methods, generally mainly to brake, if the next vehicle is not close, the steering wheel will hit some to the left.

Fortunately, there were no casualties, but he said:

On July 6, when negotiating with Tesla officials, he learned that the FSD function of model 3 was indeed turned on at that time, and the vehicle had no traces of braking, and the speed was 10 km / h.

Both sides speculated that the reason for the acceleration of the vehicle may be that the vehicle was cruising at that time and automatically followed the car in front of it. At the time of the accident, a muck truck in front of it was also in the state of starting and accelerating.

However, the owner was puzzled why model 3 did not recognize the existence of the muck truck nearby. All of a sudden, he did not notice whether the presence of the dump truck was recognized on the central control panel of model 3.

He believes that Tesla's FSD has problems in the processing logic of this matter, but Tesla thinks that there is no problem with its own processing logic.

Intelligent driving industry veteran told new smart driving: FSD is carrying tesla version 3.0 hardware, sensor layout is 8 cameras 1 millimeter wave radar 12 ultrasonic radar. Among them, millimeter wave radar is mainly used to detect obstacles far ahead, and ultrasonic radar is used to detect nearby vehicles, but the clarity is general. At the time of the incident, the residue vehicle on the Model3 side, relying on the side camera and ultrasonic radar, may not be able to detect the side of the residue vehicle.

(new smart drive note: 8 cameras include 1 trinocular camera, 2 front camera, 2 rear camera and 1 rear camera.)

For example, a person squatting on the ground and looking up at an object more than half a meter higher than his own height is hard to see. Model 3 may have been in this state at that time.

But again, Model 3.

Clearly, Tesla's response is not convincing.

Latest progress: Suspected encounter with the vehicle concerned

In the latest developments in the incident, Lei Feng net (public name: Lei Feng net) also found that the owner of the suspected encounte

In an interview with leifeng.com, the owner of the car said: at present, the automatic driving hardware used in his imported model 3 is version 2.5.

However, from the official configuration of Tesla, the hardware configuration of the vehicle with FSD full automatic driving function is actually version 3.0.

What is the concept between the two hardware versions?

Generally speaking, the difference between version 2.5 and version 3.0 is that the former uses NVIDIA's customized drive PX2 computing platform, while the latter uses Tesla's self-developed FSD computing platform. In terms of performance, the image processing ability of the latter is 21 times of that of the former, and the computing power is increased by about 7 times, but the energy consumption is only 1.25 times of that of version 2.5.

In a word, the hardware version 3.0 can realize the full automatic driving function through OTA, and the performance is more powerful. This is also the foundation of Tesla to build a robotaxi team in 2020. But the hardware version 2.5 can realize the function of auto pilot.

Different hardware brings different functions. An obvious difference is that the 2.5 hardware version of model 3 can't identify the ice cream cone on the road.

The owner also told xinzhijia that he had repeatedly confirmed with the official after-sales service that his model 3 was indeed the version of hardware 2.5. In fact, he didn't know the difference in hardware. After sales also promised to update the hardware to version 3.0, but it was never expected.

In other words, the FSD full automatic driving kit that the owner spent 56000 yuan to buy is actually the hardware of autopilot 2.5.

He had previously encountered an ice cream cone unrecognizable on a 120 km / h highway, but it was his manual intervention that prevented the collision.

Tesla hardware

In March this year, foreign media reported that a user of Tesla Model 3 in Canada found that the model 3 he purchased in September 2019 was actually a 2.5 hardware version. However, when purchasing at the beginning, the shopping guide told him that the vehicle would be equipped with 3.0 hardware version.

Domestic Model 3 and imported Model 3 owners have been reported in March

After the incident, Tesla responded that the supply chain was affected under the epidemic situation, so some domestic model 3 models adopted the 2.5 hardware version, and promised to replace the 3.0 hardware for the domestic model 3 owners free of charge.

However, Tesla did not respond to the imported model 3 owners.

Prior to the launch of FSD in 2019, Tesla said it would provide free hardware version 3.0 for vehicles after April 2019.

According to the daily economic news, a U.S. model 3 owner said that since June 2019, all Tesla models on sale in the United States, with or without FSD, are equipped with hw3.0 hardware.

But in the case of Canadian and domestic import Model 3 owners, Tesla has not fulfilled its commitments and there are serious ones
