YouTube on Thursday restored compatibility with Apple's IOS 14 picture in picture feature, which will allow all users to minimize content from their mobile browser and then view other information.Earlier this month, YouTube made a controversial change to limit PIP functionality to YouTube premium users.
Currently, YouTube apps don't support picture in picture on IOS, but the video site offered a useful workaround until about two weeks ago. Because the picture in picture feature still supports premium users and Youtube content embedded in third-party Web pages, the company is thought to be actively updating code on its mobile site to block free access to IOS 14 features. This makes sense, because the picture in picture feature essentially enables background audio, which was originally a popular premium feature.
However, from today on, picture in picture compatibility for IOS browsers seems to have been restored. It's not clear if the change is permanent, but for now all users, including premium users and free account users, can view picture in picture content via safari.
Apple introduced picture in picture video viewing for the first time in IOS 14iPhoneAt first, it was borrowediPadOS function, which allows users to reduce the video content window, FaceTime call, and so on, and float on top of other applications. The picture in picture window can also be minimized to the side of the screen to play only audio.
