Seagate and western data seem to reveal future road maps after quarterly results, especially new magnetic recording technology and larger hard disk capacity, but most remain on paper.
Western Digital has put the energy assisted magnetic recording (epmr) and micro blog assisted magnetic recording (mamr) technologies into practical use, and the maximum capacity of a single disk has reached 20tb. This is the ultrastar DC hc650 20tb and hc550 18tb that have been adopted by Huawei, Dropbox and other customers.
Seagate also promised to shift its hard disk to the development of thermal auxiliary magnetic recording (HARM) technology for too many years. In December, it released a 20 TB hard disk based on the technology, with better performance and higher reading and writing efficiency, but no specific targets have been announced.
CEO Dave Mosley Seagate stated:
He also revealed that with HAMR technology, Seagate is expected to provide a 50 TB capacity mechanical hard disk in 2026.
This is not the first time Seagate has said it will launch 50 TB of hard drives around 2026, emphasizing that it will completely eliminate the hated SMR tile technology.
