Microsoft is challenging Apple's Keychain to bring its autofill system for password storage and synchronization to IOS and Mac OS. These features will come from the update of Microsoft's authenticator application and Google's Chrome extension.Microsoft autofill, similar to keychain and many other password managers on the market, can store and automatically insert account credentials for various applications and services.
After the upgrade of Microsoft authenticator application launched on Friday, the password storage function has been added through autofill. Once the settings are completed, the password saved to the Microsoft account using Microsoft edge browser will be automatically synchronized with the application.
For Mac users, the new features of Microsoft accounts can be used through the Microsoft autofill browser extension. The extension can be used in chrome online store, and can automatically fill in the account voucher in Google Chrome browser and Microsoft edge browser. The extension also provides a way for users to manage their stored passwords and view and edit details when appropriate.
Although this has enabled Microsoft to enter the same market as lastpass, 1Password and other third-party tools, and has made it consistent with apple and Google in providing cross platform password synchronization, it may not be enough for Apple's user base. For example, it is limited to two browsers on Mac OS, while Apple's Keychain is system wide and can be used in many different applications.
