On September 13 last year, NVIDIA announced on its official website that they had reached a final agreement with Softbank group on the acquisition of arm with a transaction scale of US $40 billion. At that time, they expected to complete the acquisition in about 18 months. However, the acquisition that NVIDIA is looking forward to faces many obstacles. Not only the co-founder of arm opposes the acquisition by NVIDIA, but also many chip manufacturers, such as Qualcomm and Intel, oppose the acquisition. The European Union and the United Kingdom are also conducting antitrust investigations on the acquisition.
Chip manufacturers oppose NVIDIA's acquisition of arm mainly because they are worried that NVIDIA will change the chip architecture licensing mode of arm after the acquisition. Customers of arm include Intel, apple, Qualcomm, Samsung and many other manufacturers, as well as NVIDIA.
In response to this concern from the outside world, Huang Renxun, CEO and co-founder of NVIDIA, said that NVIDIA will maintain arm's open authorization mode and has no intention of restricting or rejecting any customers.
After the two companies reached a final acquisition agreement, whether NVIDIA's acquisition of arm can be successfully completed depends on whether the antitrust regulatory authorities can approve it. When the acquisition was announced in September last year, NVIDIA was expected to complete it within 18 months.
