Can mutated new strains evade screening? Expert response: it doesn't have to be mutation or kit failure

According to French media reports, a new variant of the new coronavirus was found in the Lani Hospital of amol coastal province in Brittany, France. On February 22, a cluster infection was found inside a business in Brittany.

Three weeks later, a total of 79 patients were diagnosed with this cluster infection in LaNi hospital, of which 8 patients carried the mutated new coronavirus found for the first time. Although the 8 patients had typical symptoms of infection, the nucleic acid test (PCR) results of nasopharyngeal samples were negative.

For the above situation, Yang zhanqiu, Professor of Virology Research Institute of Medical Department of Wuhan University, said in an interview that the phenomenon that nucleic acid test results are negative for confirmed cases is not necessarily due to variation.First, the virus mutates very slowly, and it takes a long time for vaccines and kits to fail. It usually takes three or four years for vaccines or kits to be unable to cope with mutated viruses.

In addition, whether the virus infection is transferred to the lungs or not, the virus is bound to exist in the respiratory tract, such as through cough and other symptoms.

Yang zhanqiu believes that the results of nucleic acid detection are related to the stage of onset, kit and detection method. First of all, patients in the early stage of the virus is not much, nucleic acid detection is likely to be negative; in addition, there are differences between different companies and different kits, so in order to achieve accuracy, we need to review at all levels of institutions. Whether the new strain found in France is more cunning still needs to be further studied.
