USB fast charge soars to 240W: 10 Chinese enterprises make significant contributions

Major update of USB PD fast charging standard


After the release of USB PD 3.1 standard, the charging head network got the latest universal serial bus power delivery specification for the first time.


The latest USB PD 3.1 fast charging specification divides the power into standard power range (SPR) and extended power range (EPR).

The standard power range is the mainstream USB pd3.0 standard on the market, and the maximum charging power is still 100W; The newly added 28V, 36V and 48V voltages belong to the expanded power range. The maximum output current corresponding to the three voltages is 5a, and the maximum output power can reach 240W.


In addition to three new groups of fixed voltage, USB PD 3.1 standard also adds three groups of adjustable voltage ranges (AVS) in the expanded power range, namely 15v-28v 5a, 15v-36v 5A and 15v-48v 5A. The minimum voltage step of AVS is 0.1V, and the constant power limit mode based on PDP is still used.

In USB PD 3.1 standard, USB type-C cable is divided into two specifications: 20V ordinary cable and 50V EPR cable. When the power output exceeds 100W, not only the 5A cable of EPR (extended power) needs to be used, but also the EPR specific information handshake between source, sink and cable can be used to enter EPR from SPR; If the cable is a captive cable fixed to the charger, you only need to shake hands between the source and sink.

Nearly 100 enterprises participated in the formulation of USB PD 3.1

The continuous iteration of USB PD fast charging standard is inseparable from the vigorous promotion of usb-if Association. At present, the total number of members of usb-if association has exceeded 12000.

As a major update in the history of USB charging specification, the formulation of USB PD 3.1 standard is very powerful.

In addition to apple, HP, Intel, Microsoft, Renesas Renesas, St STMicroelectronics, Ti Texas Instruments and other core members of the usb-if Association, nearly 100 domestic and foreign enterprises participated in the formulation of the standard, bringing together a team of experts of more than 500 people.


From the latest universal serial bus power delivery specification, a list of 91 enterprises participating in the formulation of USB PD 3.1 standard was obtained. Products of participating enterprises involve terminal hardware, interface chip, power chip, usb-c connector, OEM, certification service and other types.


It is worth noting that in the development process of this USB PD 3.1 specification,Huawei, Xiaomi, Lenovo, Lucent precision, huinengtai, silijie, Silicon Valley digital analog, Derun semiconductor, selcom and many other domestic companies have actively participated in the competition, of which Shenzhen enterprises account for half, making important contributions to the new standard.

This is the first time that Chinese local enterprises have participated in the formulation of USB PD fast charging standards, and it also reflects that local enterprises are rising and are recognized by the international standards association.


Statistics show that,In the USB PD 3.1 standard setting unit, the proportion of us enterprises is the highest, reaching 50%, and the proportion of enterprises in China's Taiwan area is about 19%, Chinese mainland enterprises account for about 12%, and Japanese enterprises account for about 9%.

In addition, some enterprises come from the UK, South Korea, Switzerland, the Netherlands, India and other countries and regions.


Through sorting out, it is found that among the many enterprises participating in the formulation of USB PD 3.1 standard, the proportion of fast charging chip companies is quite high, reaching 19, including the familiar USB PD fast charging protocol chip brands cypress, huinengtai, Tongjia, NXP, Qualcomm, Likai, Weifeng, Weiquan, etc.


As can be seen from the pie chart, fast charging chip companies account for about 23% of the total. As the makers of new standards, these fast charging chip enterprises will also occupy a congenital advantage in the follow-up product development and application.

Two advantages of USB PD 3.1

Although the USB PD fast charging standard has experienced 10 years of development, and has been widely used in consumer power products, it is still far away from the situation that everything can be charged and the unification of usb-c interface is completed.

The maximum output of the existing USB PD fast charging device is 100W, which is even less than the charging power of a domestic mobile phone.

With the release of USB PD 3.1 standard, USB PD fast charging and usb-c interface are no longer limited to consumer electronic products, and give full play to their advantages in promoting the unification of all things chargeable and usb-c interface.

Everything can be filled


It can be seen from the development of USB charging standard that before the release of USB PD fast charging standard, most devices were charged through bc1.2 protocol, the charging power was only 7.5W, and the scope of use was limited to mobile phones, digital cameras and other products. Even if it was used for charging function machines with very small battery capacity, it usually took 2-3 hours to complete.

Until the release of USB pd2.0 specification, usb-c was defined as the standard interface, and the maximum 100W fast charging power was realized. The application scope expanded from traditional function mobile phones to smart phones, laptops, some displays and other product fields.


However, it has been seven years since the release of USB pd2.0, although it has also experienced the update of USB pd3.0, USB pd3.0 PPS and other standards, and has carried forward in the field of mobile phones and pen phones.

However, we have to admit that 100W power, which we were proud of seven years ago, has become a short board restricting the development of USB PD fast charging.

Now it seems that the output voltage of 20V and power of 100W can barely be used as the power supply of consumer electronic products, and even a game book can't be used. This also leads to many of the latest laptop products choose to bypass the usb-c interface, which seriously hinders the popularity of USB PD fast charging.


With the introduction of USB PD 3.1 standard, not only the charging voltage standard has been raised to 48V, but also the output power has been raised to 240W, which makes the application scope of USB PD fast charging standard much wider.

For example, for devices such as game books and displays, most of the charging voltages are below 20V. When the USB PD 3.1 fast charging standard is applied, it only needs to add a step-down circuit at the input end of the computer to meet the requirements of high-power charging above 100W.

For electric tools, electric bicycles, industrial power supply and other multi string lithium-ion battery equipment or equipment requiring high-voltage power supply, due to the high-voltage characteristics of multi string battery pack, it can be directly adapted through the voltage of USB PD 3.1 to expand the power range.

Unified usb-c interface


Thanks to the integration of data, power, video, audio, network and other functions of USB type-C interface, it has been widely used in smart hardware devices such as smart phones, tablet computers, laptops, desktop computers, monitors and many accessories such as chargers, mobile hard disks, earphones, USB flash drives, mobile power supplies, data cables, cameras, razors and so on.

The usb-if Association estimates that more than 2 billion type-C connectors or type-C cables will be shipped to the market in 2020; By 2023, it is estimated that 7 billion devices will carry type-c. Of course, this data is limited to consumer power products.


USB PD 3.1 standard will further expand the application of USB type-C interface in display, server, power tools, security Poe power supply, DC motor and other fields.

For example, in terms of the field of electric tools, the survey data shows that the shipment of electric tools will reach 490 million in 2020. If these products are upgraded to USB PD 3.1 fast charging with USB type-C interface, it will be further away from the domination of usb-c interface.


USB PD 3.1 specification is a major update in the history of USB charging technology, and also a disruptive technology iteration; It completely breaks the traditional perception of USB PD fast charging and makes USB PD fast charging more inclusive.

USB PD 3.1 standard is no longer limited to the application of mobile phones, laptops and other traditional fields. Portable power tools, Internet of things devices, smart home, communication and security equipment, automobile and medical and other fields will become the potential market of the new standard. The unification of fast charging standards is a step closer to our life.

USB PD 3.1 standard will bring a new market for the whole power supply industry, especially for the fast charging chip, MOS, protocol chip, e-marker chip, charging cable, usb-c connector and other related industrial chains.

As a big exporter of consumer electronic products, China has the largest USB PD fast charging market and the most complete USB PD fast charging industry chain in the world; But for a long time, the voice of USB PD fast charging standard has been in the hands of European and American enterprises.

In the USB PD 3.1 standard, whether it is the terminal hardware or the original chip factory, local enterprises have begun to participate. It not only strengthens the communication and cooperation between the local industry chain and usb-if Association, but also promotes the rapid commercial use of the new standard with the help of the advantages of Chinese local manufacturers in the industry chain.
