PHOENIX, Oct 16 (Xinhua) -- Using social networks such as Facebook, Twitter and Instagram can cause 46 harms to users, including anxiety, depression and tiredness, affecting physical and mental health, as well as work and study, according to a study by the University of Technology In Sydney, Australia.
The 46 hazards of using social networks include anxiety, depression, tiredness, suicidal tendencies, online bullying, and information overload
Past research has focused on the "benefits and potential" of using social networks, the researchers said, with harm largely unheeded, and that "the extreme popularity of social networks highlights the importance of the benefits and harms of using them." Social networks such as Facebook and Instagram now have more than 3.6 billion users worldwide.
The researchers analyzed more than 50 papers published between 2003 and 2018 related to the use of social networks.
The researchers divided the harms of social networks into six categories: cost of social communication, harassing content, privacy concerns, security threats, online bullying, and poor performance.
A deeper understanding of the dangers of using social networks could encourage self-discipline and help software developers, educators and policymakers develop measures to minimize harm, the researchers said. (Author/Frost Leaf)
