With the advent of COVID-19, the popularity of USB-C interface is accelerating. When will it be adopted in iPhone?

According to Omdia's 2021 Interface Battleground Report, usB-C AV interfaces will see healthy growth as COVID-19 driven shifts in consumer technology sales impact audiovisual (AV) penetration into the infrastructure market, HDMI faces slower growth prospects.

Meanwhile, in Omdia's 2021 USB Type-C Report, Omdia found that by 2020, almost 80% of laptops and almost half of smartphones will have USB-C ports, and adoption rates for both devices are expected to continue to grow. The adoption of these core devices led to the adoption of satellite equipment and opened the door to new uses such as portable desktop displays and universal docking stations.

Some time ago,The European Union has proposed a proposal requiring mobile phone manufacturers to unify the interface with USBC. Those who have used this interface know its advantages. Now Android manufacturers are basically upgrading to USBC interface, which is apple's insistence on lightning interface rather than upgrading USB-C interface.

Apple's objection is also environmental protection, claiming that the use of Lightning interface can avoid the waste of charging head before. However, it is known that Apple's objection to USBC interface is mainly to maintain its own business, after all, the certification of Lightning interface and accessories is an industry chain worth tens of billions of dollars.

In the process of harmonizing the USBC interface in the European Union, an unexpected opponent emerged, which turned out to be usB-IF,Jeffrey L. Ravencraft, president of the official USB promotion organization, has written a 4-page PDF in which he opposes the eu's decision to use the USBC as a process port for mobile phones, arguing that it will lead to operational, functional issues, confusion and controversy.

There are two main reasons Jeffrey L. Ravencraft opposes the eu to unify the USBC interface. One is that the EU standard is outdated and their USBC interface standard does not take into account the latest development, including the 240W charging USBC standard which was just released recently.

The second point is USBC interface. Although we all know the benefits of USBC interface, forcing the use of this standard will also lead to the ecological decoupling of other types of USB interface from USB. We should let the market choose which TYPE of USB interface.

There is also the part of charging protocol. In the EU standard, QC charging protocol of Qualcomm is supported, but USB-IF organization will not make certification of this standard, and they mainly promote USB PD charging standard.
