According to Mark Gurman's latest edition of Bloomberg's Power On newsletter,Apple is still working on short - and long-distance wireless charging solutions, hoping to create a charger that can charge multiple products at once.

According to Gurman's report, Apple envisions a scenario in which the iPad could charge the iPhone and the iPhone could charge the AirPods, many of which could be in a truly wireless form with no direct physical contact between the devices. More likely, Apple will start with inductive reverse charging and work its way up to true wireless technology.

Wireless charging and reverse charging are not new technologies, as Apple introduced the AirPower wireless charging dock for the iPhone X in 2017.But since its launch, the device has been plagued by problems such as overheated charging, communication between devices and coil interference.

AirPower's design was considered too radical by some in the industry at the time of its launch. Most of the wireless charging devices on the market at the time were for just one device, but AirPower can charge the iPhone, Apple Watch and AirPods at the same time. AirPower also allows the device to be placed anywhere on the front of the charging pad. This means that the charger must be equipped with multiple transmitting rings, and the space plan of the charger must ensure that there is enough cooling space for each coil to ensure that there is no overlapping interference of coils. But the subsequent performance of AirPower made it clear that Apple had not solved the problem perfectly, and the project ended in 2019.

But in recent years, wireless charging has made a comeback. Many mobile phone brands are developing wireless charging devices that can charge multiple devices at the same time as one of the selling points of their new mobile phone launches. At the end of 2020, Samsung launched a three-in-one wireless charging pad, and earlier this year, it was reported that Samsung was working on a wireless charging device similar to AirPower, aiming to take the lead in the wireless charging market.

Apple, the world's leading mobile phone brand, ended its AirPower program two years ago, but that doesn't mean it's giving up on wireless charging as a fledgling market. In addition, The revival of apple's wireless charging program may also be a move to boost the iPhone amid fierce competition.

Although wireless charging technology has been developed for many years, its application scope has not been promoted, and the feasibility and practicability of wireless charging and reverse charging of mobile phones have been discussed in the market. Wireless charging liberates the shackles between the phone and the charger, but it fixes the usage scenario. At the same time, with the improvement of mobile phone performance, the demand for power is also increasing, and the energy problem is still the core technology of wireless charging. Whether the wireless era can come depends on who can take the lead in overcoming technical difficulties.
