Google has launched an open source API standard called Ripple, co-developed by Ford Motor, for products such as electronic devices and even cars. Ripple is sponsored by the Consumer Technology Association (CTA), the industry body that holds the CES show in Las Vegas every January, but it is Google that is really driving the project.

Ivan Poupyrev, Head of ATAP (Advanced Technology and Projects) at Google, said: "Ripple benefits everyone. "Common radar is an emerging technology that addresses critical issues in a way that respects privacy." According to reports, Ripple's predecessor may be the "standard radar API" that Google proposed a year ago.

Google has been announcing Project Soli, a tiny radar chip, since 2015. Application scenarios include monitoring sleep status and controlling smart watches.
