Zhitong Finance APP has learned that Facebook's parent company, Meta Platforms(Fb.us), will expand its office in Texas. The company has leased half of the offices in the tallest skyscraper in Austin, Texas.
Meta has leased 33 floors, 589,000 square feet, of a 66-story tower under construction in downtown Austin. The tower, called Sixth and Guadalupe, is scheduled to open in 2023.
"When we first came to Austin over a decade ago, we had seven employees, and now we have more than 2,000," Katherine Shappley, head of Meta's Austin office, said in a statement. Meta is planning to hire more than 400 employees locally.
A broader shift to telecommuting as a result of the pandemic has led to a booming economy in Texas as businesses look to expand to lower-cost locations.
Samsung electronics announced in November that it would build a large new chip plant in Taylor, northeast of Austin. The move comes a month after Tesla (TSLA.us) said it would move its headquarters from Palo Alto, Calif., to Austin. Oracle (ORCL.us) moved its headquarters from Silicon Valley to Austin in 2020.
