Alphabet, the parent company of Google inc., is under pressure from an environmentally-minded investor who is calling on the company to let customers repair their devices to reduce e-waste.

Mutual fund company Green Century said on Tuesday it had submitted a shareholder proposal to Alphabet asking the company to make Google's devices more environmentally friendly by making them easier to repair by consumers and independent stores. Green Century also urged the company to stop lobbying for legislation that would block expanded access to repairs.

Alphabet shareholders could be asked to vote on the proposal at the company's annual meeting. Shareholder resolutions, while not legally binding in the United States and Canada, are still a way for companies to adopt more sustainable practices.
