Introduction of the China Geological Survey,The total underground freshwater storage in the north is about 35.5 trillion cubic meters, accounting for 95% of the country.It is mainly distributed in the Ordos Basin, northeast plain, Hexi corridor, north China plain and other regions, which can provide strategic reserves for ensuring water security in the north.
The total underground freshwater storage in the south is about 1.9 trillion cubic meters, accounting for only 5% of the country.It is mainly distributed in Jianghan Dongting Plain, Yangtze River Delta, Chengdu Plain and other areas.
In addition, there are about 14.7 trillion cubic meters of underground saltwater storage in the country, mainly distributed in the Tarim Basin, junggar basin, Qaidam basin and other areas.
In addition, the national groundwater storage increased by 36.3 billion cubic meters. In 2021, there was a net increase of 35.7 billion cubic meters of shallow groundwater storage and 600 million cubic meters of deep groundwater storage over the previous year.
Of the 17 major plain basins, 16 saw a net increase in groundwater storage and 1 in a decrease in groundwater storage. Among them, thanks to the heavy precipitation process in the 2021 flood season of the North China Plain and the comprehensive treatment of groundwater over-exploitation in North China, the groundwater storage capacity in the North China Plain increased by 1.71 billion cubic meters.
