Apple has quietly improved the audio quality of AirPods Pro/AirPods 3 wireless headphone calls

According to Apple Insider, a new report claims that Apple's AirPods Pro's voice audio quality improved when AirPods 3 was introduced in 2021.

A phrase buried in the AirPods 3 announcement states that the new Bluetooth wireless headphones support AAC-ELD, a "superior voice codec that delivers full HD voice quality." The update to the codec also works with AirPods Pro, according to one developer.

Aac-eld, or Advanced Audio Codec - Enhanced Low Latency, is a variant of the AAC standard used on most streaming services. However, it also includes better audio quality and reduced latency for spoken communication, developer Marco Pfeiffer said in a Medium post.

While Apple said the AirPods 3 got the AC-ELD codec, Pfeiffer was able to confirm that Apple also added a new Bluetooth profile to the AirPods Pro.

The result should be improved audio quality as users answer calls. That's because AirPods automatically switch to a two-way profile when answering a call, which typically results in poor audio quality.

It's possible that the AAC-eld codec could also be added to other older Models of AirPods, but Pfeiffer could only confirm that the profile is supported on AirPods Pro.

Pfeiffer noted that the new profile is an improvement, but not perfect. The inherent limitations of Bluetooth data rates can still cause problems when using bidirectional audio profiles.
