AMD's Q3 results, coming just days after Intel's less-than-stellar Q3 results, were $5.565 billion, up 29% from $4.313 billion a year earlier, bucking the trend in the current environment.

In the bottom line, however, AMD was also tested, with net income under GAPP of $66 million, down 93% from $923 million a year earlier.

On a non-GAAP basis, AMD's Q3 adjusted net income was $1.095 billion, up 23% from $893 million a year earlier.

According to AMD,The difference in earnings was mainly due to the amortization of assets and increased investment in research and development resulting from the acquisition of Xilinx.There isn't much wrong with AMD's results per se, it's just that growth didn't live up to expectations.

But the PC space is in trouble,Q3 revenues were down 40 per cent and profits were off a cliff.

The revenue and earnings of AMD's main businesses are as follows:

Revenue for the data center segment was $1.609 billion, up 45% from $2.398 billion a year earlier. Operating income was $505 million, compared with $308 million a year earlier; Operating margins were 31%, compared with 28% a year earlier.

Revenue in the client division was $1.022 billion, down 40 percent from $1.692 billion a year earlier.The operating loss was $26m, compared with an operating profit of $490m a year earlier.

Revenue for the gaming division was $1.631 billion, up 14% from $1.434 billion a year earlier. Operating income was $142 million, compared with $231 million a year ago; Operating margins were 9%, compared with 16% a year earlier.

Revenue for the embedded products segment was $1.303 billion, up 1549% from $79 million a year earlier. Operating income was $635 million, compared with $23 million a year ago; Operating margins were 49%, compared with 30% a year earlier.

All other segments had an operating loss of $1.320 billion, compared with an operating loss of $104 million a year earlier.
