Huawei is about to launch 12nm/14nm chip? It's unlikely, because the foundry doesn't dare to take the order.

Recently, a blogger who often broke the news about Huawei's technology said that the first mass production of Huawei's 12nm and 14nm chipsets was in preparation, and even the whistleblower said that one of the chips was already in internal use.

As soon as the news came out, netizens were excited, because Huawei's Kirin chip has been the best since September 15, 2020, and can only be supported by inventory.

As soon as the news came out, netizens were excited, because Huawei's Kirin chip has been the best since September 15, 2020, and can only be supported by inventory.

Therefore, if Huawei's 12nm/14nm chip can be mass produced, it will definitely be a piece of good news. Although such a chip may not have enough performance for mobile phone Soc, it is sufficient for power management chips, wearable devices, 5G base stations, televisions, Internet of things, switches, routers and other fields.

But is the news true? I do not think it is very possible, because even if it is 12nm/14nm, I am afraid that no foundry can take orders, or that people dare not take orders, because at present, no wafer factory does not need American technology or equipment, so they all have to listen to the United States.

We know that based on the long arm jurisdiction policy of the United States, any manufacturer that uses American technology / equipment needs to obtain a license from the United States if it wants to help Huawei produce chips. It means that you can either get a license or not use American technology to help Huawei produce chips.

Obviously, the license will not be issued at present, so there is only another way to go, that is, do not use American technology, all use non-American technology and equipment, and so on, then there will be no restrictions and you can help Huawei produce chips.

In order to achieve this goal, wafer factories in the mainland need all supply chains and all domestic technologies and equipment, such as lithography machines, etching machines, materials, EDA, and so on, all of which are made in China and achieve 12nm/14nm accuracy.

But the question is, can domestic equipment keep up with it? According to the analysis of an organization, at present, if pure domestic equipment / technology is used, the process that can be realized is even difficult for 28nm, and it may be in the stage of 45nm or even 60nm, especially in the lithography machine, the domestic precision can only reach 45nm after two exposures at 90nm.

In addition, such as glue developer, ion implantation machine, cleaning machine, heat treatment equipment, etc., most can only achieve 28nm or more mature accuracy, far less than the accuracy of 12/14nm.

Therefore, the mass production of the so-called 12nm and 14nm chips may be just the blogger's guess, and we don't have to take it too seriously.

Of course, I hope Huawei can quickly find a contract manufacturer, produce 12nm/14nm chips, and hit me in the face. If that's the case, I'd be happy to send my face up to be beaten.
