Beijing time January 19 morning news, it is reported that on Wednesday, local time, Amazon executives sent an email to confirm the start of a new round of layoffs, as previously reported, the layoffs are expected to affect 18,000 people, the largest number of layoffs in the history of technology.
Doug Herrington, Amazon's head of global retail, sent an email to employees informing them of the layoffs, and Beth Galetti, Amazon's head of human resources, confirmed the cuts.
The cuts are likely to be hardest hit in human resources and stores. Amazon will notify all affected employees in the United States, Canada and Costa Rica by the end of Wednesday, and other locations at a later date. Employees in China will not be notified until later this year.
Amazon went on a hiring spree during the pandemic. In November, Amazon CEO Andy Jassy said he would cut jobs, mainly in the equipment and recruiting teams.
Mr. Jassi is conducting a sweeping review of Amazon's expenses amid the economic downturn and slowing growth in its core retail business. Amazon has frozen hiring, cut some experimental projects and slowed warehouse expansion.
