Sina science and technology news Beijing time on February 16 morning news, it is reported that the European Union will investigate Amazon $1.7 billion acquisition of sweeping robot manufacturer iRobot this deal.
The EU is concerned about privacy because the Roomba, a sweeping robot developed by iRobot, can take pictures of users inside their rooms. Eu regulators have sent Amazon a series of questions about transparency. Amazon insists there are privacy restrictions inside the Roomba and that buying iRobot would not give it an edge in the market for vacuum-sweeping robots, where there are so many competitors. In the US, the FTC is pursuing a similar investigation into Amazon, but with a focus on competition.
iRobot ended the day up 0.97 percent at $41.73 a share, but it was still nearly 30 percent below the $59 a share Amazon offered, suggesting that investors were skeptical that the deal would pass muster.
