The DS division has been a major source of profit for Samsung Semiconductors, but the sharp drop in semiconductor prices late last year has hit the company hard. Other businesses, including smartphones, consumer electronics and displays, also saw varying degrees of decline.

Samsung Electronics' total profit in 2022 was 43.4 trillion won (about 228.718 billion yuan), of which Samsung's semiconductor business contributed 23.8 trillion won (about 125.426 billion yuan).

On a quarterly basis, it was 8.5 trillion won ($6 billion) in the first quarter of 2022, 9.9 trillion won ($7.5 billion) in the second quarter of 2022, and 5.12 trillion won ($3.8 billion) in the third quarter.

In the fourth quarter, Samsung's operating profit fell 97 percent year-on-year to 270 billion won. Samsung Electronics has borrowed 20 trillion won ($16 billion) from its Samsung Display unit to keep pushing its semiconductor business.
